Direct Answer
What is Answer Engine Optimization?

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring web content so that AI-powered answer engines — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Gemini — extract it and cite it in their responses. Unlike traditional SEO, which targets position in Google's ranked list, AEO targets citation inside AI-generated answers. The key signals are structured FAQ markup, clear entity definitions in Schema, and answer-capsule content formatted for direct extraction.

Why AEO matters now

More than a billion people now use AI assistants as their primary search interface. When someone asks ChatGPT "what is the best local accountant in Madrid?" or Perplexity "which construction company in Porto should I call?", the AI generates a direct answer — citing sources it judges authoritative and well-structured. If your business appears in that answer, the lead arrives with their question already answered and their intent fully resolved.

Traffic from AI assistant referrals converts at a significantly higher rate than standard organic search traffic. The reason is intent resolution: the AI has pre-qualified the user, explained the solution and endorsed your brand before the user ever reaches your page. You are not competing for attention — you are receiving a warm handoff.

Key distinction: AEO is not about writing for robots. It is about being the clearest, most direct, most authoritative source on a topic — which serves human readers equally well. Good AEO makes your content better for everyone.

How AI assistants decide what to cite

Large language models and retrieval-augmented AI systems (like Perplexity) evaluate content across several dimensions when deciding which sources to cite:

  • Directness: Does the page answer the question immediately, without burying the answer in preamble?
  • Structured markup: Does the page include FAQPage, Article or Service Schema that makes its purpose machine-readable?
  • Entity clarity: Does Schema markup define who you are — your organization name, type, location, area served?
  • Topical authority: Does the domain have multiple pages covering related aspects of the same topic?
  • Content freshness: Is the page recently published or updated, with a visible date?
  • Technical quality: Does the page load fast and render cleanly for web crawlers?

None of these signals are new — most also improve traditional SEO. The difference is their relative weight. For AI citation, direct answer structure and Schema markup matter more than backlink count. A well-structured page on a newer domain can out-cite an older domain with thousands of backlinks, if its answer format is cleaner.

The anatomy of AEO-optimised content

1. The answer capsule

At the top of every key page, place a short, self-contained answer to the primary question that page targets. Keep it under 150 words. Use plain language. This is the block AI systems extract first — you can see this format in action on this very page, above.

2. Question-format headings

Use H2 and H3 headings written as questions: "How does AEO differ from SEO?", "What content format works best for AEO?". This matches the natural language queries users type into AI assistants — and the queries AI systems use when retrieving content to answer follow-up questions.

3. FAQPage Schema

Implement FAQPage Schema (JSON-LD) on every page with a questions section. This gives AI crawlers a machine-readable summary of every question and answer on the page — they do not need to parse prose to find them. Google also surfaces FAQ Schema in rich results, giving you additional SERP real estate.

4. Entity Schema

Your Organization Schema should define: your business name, URL, logo, contact point, area served and service type. This establishes your entity identity with AI systems. It is how ChatGPT knows that "Mr. Mo" is an AI SEO agency in Spain, not a random string of text — and how it decides you are relevant when someone asks about AI web agencies in Spain.

AEO vs SEO: complementary, not competing

A common misconception is that AEO replaces SEO. It does not. Google organic search still delivers substantial volume, and ranking on Google remains a primary goal for most businesses. The relationship between AEO and SEO is additive: AEO optimisations almost never hurt Google rankings, and frequently help them, because Google's own AI systems — including AI Overviews — use the same structured signals.

The practical implication: implement AEO on top of solid technical SEO. Do not trade one for the other. The businesses that will dominate discovery over the next three years will rank on Google and be cited in AI answers — dual-channel visibility.

Getting started with AEO

The most impactful first steps, in order of effort vs return:

  • Add a direct answer capsule to your homepage and top service pages
  • Implement FAQPage Schema on every page with a questions section
  • Audit and complete your Organization and Service Schema — especially name, URL, area served
  • Rewrite H2/H3 headings as questions that match real user queries
  • Ensure your pages load in under 2 seconds (AI crawlers penalise slow pages)
  • Publish one authoritative article per topic cluster, then interlink related pages
